Choosing the Perfect Coffee Table

A living room without a coffee table is like a full face of make-up without lipstick - it’s a crucial piece of the puzzle. Coffee tables usually serve as the center of a living room, doubling as storage space and a footrest. However, with so many choices available, how should you decide which one to bring home?

Functions

The first consideration should be the function of the table. Do you want it to be primarily decorative, or to serve a practical purpose? If you need storage for miscellaneous items, opt for tables with drawers or compartments. For those who frequently place drinks on it, a table with an elevated border might be ideal to prevent spills on the carpet or wooden floor. If it's for decorative purposes, you can focus on the finish and texture that you fantasize about.

Shape

Think about your typical activities in the living room. What shape of coffee table would best complement these habits? If you have kids or pets, circular or rounded-edge tables are ideal for preventing injuries and easing movement in a room with multiple chairs. If you have more space, a rectangular table might be more convenient, as all its sides are equally accessible from the sofa. Just be careful to avoid bumping your toe on the legs!

Size

Size matters too. The height of your coffee table should align with the height of your sofa, ideally no shorter than 5cm (2 inches) lower. A standard 0.5m (18 inch) height usually works well with most sofas. Picture yourself reaching for items on the coffee table; the height should feel comfortable. If you're opting for a table with an elevated border, ensure the edges are lower than the seats to prevent spills, as people tend to take cups horizontally.

Budget

The price range for coffee tables can vary widely. The overall budget for your room includes lighting, sofas, main tables, chairs, and the coffee table, with the latter often being a lower priority. Consider the spatial distribution of your larger furniture first; the coffee table can be chosen last, allowing for a more flexible budget. If you plan to invest in a high-quality coffee table, remember that its price shouldn't compromise the budget for sturdy and durable sofas and chairs.
